Rocky’s new friend Elly

Elly is a new addition to the farm crew. She keeps Rocky on his toes and loves to entertain. You can usually find these two galavanting around the farm, playing tug-o-war or chewing on each other. Rocky stays true to his form using his boxing techniques and Elly does too by going straight for his jugular. They are in love!

Adios Aphids! 4/23/10

Big thanks to Nature’s Control for sending us some super hungry aphid destroyers! We have had some issues with aphids in the greenhouse so we called Nature’s Control in Medford, Oregon. They are number one in natural pest control, you can purchase their products from us or order directly from them at naturescontrol.com. Here’s some pics of our organic avengers hunting these destructive little pests.

What’s growing

We have Basil, Romaine, Cilantro and some Butter Head lettuce ready for market. The basil is loving the warmer weather but the lettuce not so much. Stay tuned to see our upcoming mods to cool down the greenhouse.

Braise your beef!

Here is a dish inspired by meat! I made some chicken stock the other day and got some beautiful true free range beef from the farmers market @ wickham park on Thursday. The cut I bought was a rump roast which was weighing in at 3 lbs. It got broke down to chunks, sprinkled with French gray sea salt and braised in the cast iron pan to a nice dark brown. That got tossed into the chicken stock along with some onions, fresh fennel, carrots, rosemary, oregano, garlic and some parsley. This will simmer down for about 6 hours and get nice and tender. Check back later for the next step….

Todays harvest 4/10/10

I pulled one massive head of bok choi, 3 bulbs of fennel, 2 beets w/ greens, and some broccoli. Tasty stuff!

Market Cancled 4/10/10

We cancled the market today. Got to the greenhouse today and looks a little short on product today. The romaine needs some time and there is a ton a work to do here at the farm. We have to get more tomatoes transplanted and some drip irrigation installed so we can continue to supply the markets with more of a selection.

Thanks to all who have supported us at the markets. Hope to see you soon!

Grow Your Own! It Tastes Better!

Thanks Frank!

Just wanted to say thanks to Frank from the Cocoa Beach market. He brought us some wonderful local brussel sprouts from his garden on the beach. I made them how he suggested and they were awesome. Next time you run across some fresh b-sprouts use this recipe. Take 1/2 onion diced and some diced pancetta. Sauté that med heat until bacon is rendered and onions a lovely golden brown. Toss in the sliced brussel sprouts and some butter cook for 5min and serve hot. Simple and delicious.
